Islamabad: Sadiq Sanjrani elected chairman senate of Pakistan again. He defeated PDM candidate Yousaf Raza Gilani.
Sadiq Sanjrani got 48 votes and Yousaf Raza Gilani received 42 votes while 8 votes were rejected. Opposition senators protested against rejecting these votes.
7 rejected votes were casted for PDM’s Gilani these were wrongly stamped over the names rather than stamping before the name.
Yousuf Raza Gilani was the opposition alliance candidate while Sadiq Sanjarani was the ruling alliance candidate.
When did it happen in the Senate today?
The tumultuous Senate elections took place on March 3, 2021, followed by an election battle for the chairman and deputy chairman of the upper house of parliament.
Sadiq Sanjarani elected chairman senate for next three years term. He was a candidate for the PTI and the ruling coalition. Former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who belongs to the PPP, was nominated by the opposition coalition PDM.
The PDM had fielded JUI-F leader Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri as its candidate for the post of Deputy Chairman of the Senate. On the other hand, Mirza Muhammad Afridi was fielded by the government and its allies.
Election of Chairman Senate
After the swearing-in ceremony, there was a break for Friday prayers. When the meeting resumed, the Presiding Officer, Senator Muzaffar Hussain Shah, released the schedule for the election of the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate.
After the prayers, nomination papers for the posts of Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman were submitted. Voting for the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate was held at 3 o’clock.
After which the newly elected Chairman Senate ,,,,,,, took oath. After taking oath, the newly elected Chairman Senate ,,,,,,, acted as the Presiding Officer for the election of the Deputy Chairman of the Senate.
After the election, the Chairman Senate took oath from the newly elected Deputy Chairman Senate.
Newly Elected Senators Oath
Before this, 48 newly elected senators took oath on Friday morning. Among 48 new inductions to the Senate of Pakistan, some were re-elected as senators.
Controversy of Cameras
A new controversy erupted in senate of Pakistan on Friday. This controversy was over the installation of vigilance cameras near a polling booth just few hours before the chairman senate election.
During oath ceremony, opposition senators pointed cameras near polling booth for chairman senate election.
On the other hand, government expresses indifference about these cameras near polling booth.
This prompted the presiding officer to order the construction of a new polling booth.
